Billy Recce is a Billboard charting,  SoNGWRITER, PERFORMER AND PLAYWRIGHT living in New York City. 

Billy is an award-winning, Billboard-charting composer/lyricist, playwright, music director and teaching artist who believes in the transformative power of musical comedy. He actively aims to queer the canon with musicals that center fringe moments and characters from pop culture history.

One of the most prolific young musical theatre writers of his generation, Billy’s career began with the award-winning and internationally headline-making Balloon Boy: The Musical, for which he became the youngest writer ever selected for the New York Musical Theatre Festival at age 17. The show has since been produced across the country and is available for licensing.

Off-Broadway and NYC credits include Fowl Play (Book, Music, and Lyrics; directed by Olivier Award winner Tye Blue; co-book by Yoni Weiss); four simultaneously running musicals in the 2023–2024 season, including FIVE: The Parody Musical (Music and Lyrics; Theatre 555, “ABC Nightline” and NY Times Feature); A Musical About Star Wars (Music and Lyrics; AMT Theatre/St. Luke’s/Theatre Row); Singfeld (Music and Orchestrations; Jerry Orbach Theatre); Balloon Boy: The Musical (Book, Music, and Lyrics; International Thespian Festival); VAPE (Lyrics and Book, with Danny Salles; Town Hall, directed by Jack Plotnick); Petunia’s Big Day (Music and Lyrics; New Ohio Theatre, NY Times Feature); and Hear/Now (Composer; Keen Company).

His Heidi Fleiss musical, Little Black Book (Book, Music, and Lyrics; all-star concept album available everywhere), is currently slated for production. Most recently, Tony Award nominee Orfeh starred in its concert premiere at the Bowery Ballroom, directed by Tony nominee Kristin Hanggi.

Other musicals in development include 69 (Music and Lyrics), HIT SHOW (Book, Music, and Lyrics), RealityTown (Music and Lyrics), Big Man (Music and Additional Lyrics) and Guanomania! (Ensemble Studio Theatre/Sloan Commission with Elise Wein).

Licensed titles include The Big Twist: A Musical OzVenture (Music) and 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse: The Musical (Music and Lyrics), based on one of the most produced plays in America by Don Zolidis. Both are licensed by Broadway Licensing/Concord.

His songs have been heard internationally and at venues including The New Amsterdam, Broadway in Bryant Park, Barrington Stage, Cadogan Hall, Tilles Center, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Ars Nova, Irish Rep, The York Theatre, The Signature Theatre, 54 Below, The Green Room 42, and the Edinburgh Fringe.

Billy is a two-time MAC Award winner, an Orchard Project Greenhouse member, a Relentless Award semi-finalist, a Eugene O’Neill Finalist, a NAMT Finalist, a Bushwick Starr Grant Awardee, a two-time Wallowitch Award finalist, and a Jonathan Larson Grant finalist. He is currently under commission with the EST/Sloan Project, USDAN, Barrington Stage, Broadway Licensing/Concord, and several production companies.

Billy is based in New York City and is a member of ASCAP.
